As Alexis struggles to navigate her feelings for Raoul and maintain her professional position with the Benotts, she must face the challenges that come with being a caretaker in a wealthy family, as well as the challenges surrounding her budding romance with a much younger man named Gabriel.
Lindsays' writing is compelling, and her characters are deeply engaging. I loved the way she interweaves Alexis' thoughts and feelings in her narration, helping us understand the complexity of her emotions. The story is also intriguing, as we are introduced to a fascinatingly damaged family dynamic and their interactions with Alexis, who serves as a catalyst for change within their lives. The book explores themes of identity, loss, sexuality, and forgiveness, while also sprinkling in some juicy cocktail ingredients that make this a page-turner.
However, some reviewers may find the ending a bit unsatisfying, as Alexis and Gabriel's story feels abruptly resolved without a satisfying resolution to the emotional turmoil that has enveloped these characters. That said, this is an enthralling novel that will keep you turning pages until the final moments.
One final word to consider: Although it can be difficult to read through the explicit sexual content of this novel, Lindsays does an excellent job of balancing her depictions of sex with realistic details regarding orientation, gender identity, sexual dysfunction, and mental health concerns. It is brave and nuanced writing which elevates The Master Winestarter to a place among the most socially conscious novels of the year.
