In the village of Lone Oak, Sussex, a corpse is discovered in an arm chair, posed like a man wearing a waiter's brown uniform. His head and both hands have been shaved and his fingernails removed. A vizier is found stabbed to death, at the bottom of the stairs. And Roderick Alleyn is murdered: shot through the heart by a dart tipped off with a motiveless pomegranate seed.
There are many suspects, but the real criminal remains a mystery. Asile Zhou, Chinese fortune teller found by three dead men before their doom arrives, thinks she has a touch of the thing: a sixth sense guiding her to a secret door leading towards the murderer but becomes no closer.
After rummaging through Alleyn's belongings, it becomes clear that this is the second and final case that Kit will have to solve before she can decide whether to turn her life of crime solving into her profession, or leave it forever.
As she examines Alleyn's military service pin badge, she realizes what she must do, before the mystery of whatever killed him plunges them all into another life-threatening event.
