This book is set in Scotland. It tells the story of a soldier who is haunted by the death of his brother in a battle. He falls into depression and Mairi, who saved his life, helps him to overcome his mental problems and regain his health. But Mairi herself is not interested in Lucas, and she finds herself attracted to someone else, closer to her social status. Thus, the main protagonist of the novel is the nobleman, Captain Lucas Johns-Ive, and his problems are connected with the adoption of the idea that everything in this world is solved in secret and good people have rights.
