The second volume of this interesting study was published twelve years ago. Its publication received a mixed reaction. Although it was generally satisfactory in general, some critics found that the narrative was inadequate; therefore, the editor resolutely decided to embark on the most problematic period of Marshall's life: 1825-1831 - "Times of Peace." However, almost immediately after, against all odds, he abandoned the project. The third volume of this work, which goes over 100 years before Marshal entered the Supreme Court where he brought to light one of the most difficult disputes of his time - the legitimacy of the so-called "Receiver" Lawrence (A. J. Beviges). Along with this issue, the author spends a lot of time in Missouri (martial law of Furman, relationship with Jefferson Davis, interpretation by prosecutors Morris Webster), the Second President Adams and public relations with its first wife Martha Washington Smith. In view of what follows, the reader may ask how to relate to this long and rambling inheritance that nevertheless contains such a wealth of historical material. A critical attitude is advisable, not an impassible pre-scientific blindness. Certainly, most do not direct attention to the fact that millennia ago there was quite similar dispute as regards the "acting" authorities. As far as JML is concerned, an especially interesting question deals with his relations (then marshal) in regard to capital punishment. This is an element for which only recently has Pioneer historians improved interest, both sad but also revealing grandiose courtroom battles upon took place during the Marshall presidency add yet another dimension to the overall overview from Beverage of revolutionary years.
