Jonas, or Agent Jonas, was not a bad guy as the books portrayed. There were good and bad within him, because he was far from being a good guy. That's like the business aspect of marriage – it was a case of a marriage done out of practical reason, not necessarily out of love, respect, admiration and affection. Jonas needed some legitimacy to his extracurricular activities, like Jon being the pursuer / stalker of various types of men, men who are criminal, and most likely the pursuers of women as well. He was considered the savior by these criminals that they trust him implicitly because of his investigative skills.
Like I said, Alyx, the lawyer... she was against this idea of finding other people's fault. She would do anything even in the darkest hours to prove her husband's innocence. The truth is that sometimes it will take a catastrophic event to push us towards solving our problems. In her case, she just got into an extreme situation, which triggered her lawful instinct. When she returned to the bar after running away, she came for nothing more than a conversation with the bartender. But she fell into Jonas's grasp that day due to a spur of moment so that she could escape from the shaken environment (the circumstance becomes worse when a man entered the conversation).
