The title is taken from the famous, published in 1820 poem also by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth, the two famous Victorian romantics. For the most part this poem possesses a series of loosely connected poems, comprising letters, fragments of conversations, sketches, autobiographical vignettes, verse etchings, philosophical speculations, lyrical passages, all of which are somehow woven into an inextricably complex fabric of prose. None of these poems is enacted directly as "A conversation between two friends", though it is evident throughout the work that every word and each phrase have been carefully arranged in Semple's mind. But, admittedly, as muddied as this is, the full extent of what any one sentence or literary form suggests is almost impossible to determine at any stage, and although the composition is often fragmentary, it also displays the sharpness occasionally found in contemporary poetry, such as Thomas Hardy's "The Cotter's Saturday Night". The poems and the importance given to them within the structure of the work are interchangeable, they can operate both atop and beneath the ordinary level of communication and can potentially break the thread of clarity easily, if not at the request, often leaving the observer insufficient material to invest any degree of coherent inference with a satisfying completeness. Although internally, there is a liking for chronological development, the events portrayed frequently hint at being figments and ramblings of rather chaotic minds.
