Abbey Melrose stumbled into a maze of looming battlements, rose bushes spilling their petals through cracks in the ivy that roped around the stone walls of Jeremy Waters' mansion. His retiring nature, she supposed, had made him forget to keep everything maintained. Even though it was only a few weeks since she'd seen him in his small office, it seemed like an eternity now.
He blocked her way, eyes hardening at some invisible barrier. "I've told you before," he said, a steely edge to his voice. "Stay away from me."
"I can't," was all she could muster, terrified of what moves came next. It was already a terrifying situation so why even make excuses for his behavior? He wasn't her dad; she couldn't protect him from the fears spun out of his overprotective heart anymore than she could protect her own child from her mistakes. She blinked back tears and gritted her teeth. Just like when she was ten, he lay her down before she even registered the bite or the shock or even missed her excitement for midnight ice cream. She'd never tasted it so rich that night and this time, he wasn't there to catch the stream down her chin and wipe it away with a kiss on her forehead. When she lifted her eyes to search his face, she saw sternness, no doubt tempered with guilt. But no pity. No empathy. Seven long years he'd been gone and it hadn't ever crossed his mind to check on her or her son, who he perceived as competition. As was usual when Jeremy was involved in the issue at hand.
Abbey closed her eyes and took a deep breath. After all these years, lost feelings had long since waned, leaving behind just a burning, thick hatred, disguised as contempt. A sound rang out above-"why do you think it's got to be me?" She knew her questions were pointless, her breathless one-liners feeble and entirely unbecoming in her current situation and lingering emotions, so she focused on deliverance. "@ Jack, Jamie!" Her teenage sons stared incredulously as they quietly emerged from the dark hall, sleeping bags draped carelessly over their shoulders. Jack blinked several times, wide-eyed, before shooting Jeremy a deadly scowl while Jamie looked between them, silent and uncertain. Unable to tear herself away, Abbey glanced back to Jeremy, trying to read his response. All color drained from his face. His eyes flitted from Abby and the two boys to the rope and then back again. Poor Jeremy, sexist and predisposed to fatherhood but utterly unaware of it—possessed of enough cunning to fashion the perfect front, even to obscuring his own deficiencies, yet unable to pinpoint it when others laid it before him so plainly. Finally, he took a shaky step back and for a moment Abby felt a brief warm rush of relief until he turned around and walked into the house. Sadness overwhelmed her. They'd spent a lifetime fighting. So much anger remained unsaid; so much blamed unrepaid. Plunging back into her worry and tears brought Abby nothing but chagrin. Still, the old taste secrecy and defense surfaces, she directed her words to Jack and Jamie, rain making itself heard against the overgrown exterior. "Thank you. You could drop every burden alone and know I'll manage. But I need you to be honest with me." Two pairs of hesitant eyes met her brows. Streams ran freely down Jamie's pale cheeks. His body shivered silently. His jaw trembled as he wiped streaky tears away. Jake clenched his fists—the motion noticeable under the drab sleeves of his carpenter shirt. He eyed the locked front door, AdamantHand's handset glimmering richly in the lamplight deeper than it actually was, having grown latelier over the past seven years of his absence and subsequent grandmotherly ascension in the family dynamics. Despite its obvious age and cabinetry needed attention, they knew as soon as they stepped through the door they'd see her bullet-proof, ointment-coated velvet covered leather wing chair. Chalky grey walls creased with seconds-old'Grayer days'mint sage bookmarks and chartreuse soup bowls dotted with bulbous green melamine napkins. This room surrendered everything within arms reach and somehow seemed more real than anything in between its speckled yellow wallpaper, passes Golden @eagles trophy shelf, dog bread crumbs magically vanishing off the of velvet couch runner before landing promptly behind its fake leather Ottoman. How could he create a home that held its luster from all corners of the world? And how could she stand here so passively, wholly accepting that it amounted to some bitter, unsympathetic piece of baggage? That should n't have to be shared entirely with a stranger.

Описание книги от Betsy Eliot
IT WAS A MANSION RIGHT OUT OF A GOTHIC NOVEL…And so was the gruff stranger who told Abby Melrose to go home. But she'd come to Dr. Jeremy Waters for help with her exceptional little boy, and she didn't scare easily. The handsome recluse might be off-the-charts smart, but common sense told Abby he needed her as much as she needed him.Jeremy was a genius, but he was also a red-blooded male, and the determined single mother's arguments–not to mention her beauty–were crumbling the once-solid walls surrounding his lonely heart. Before long, Jeremy knew even a know-it-all had something to learn–especially when it came to the true meaning of love…
