It has also been published since 1770 without interruption under various titles such as American Magazine, the American Sage, The Monthly Register, and Literary Messenger. From 1780 to 1925 (when it switched its name from The American Magazine to "The Atlantic" because of concerns over the association with an abolitionist magazine) issues were typically published thirteen times a year: in April, May, June, November, and December, along with a supplement for July and August. In 1900, however, more issues beginning to be published each month but continuing the format of thirteen issues a year in order to continue the slate. Some critics and readers advocated for "The Atlanta Monthly" to revert to its 13-issue makeup which seemed in line with Webster's New International Dictionary, which was published around the same time as the last issue of the 11-issue setup. Daniel Donohue, editor of The Alabama Review in Montgomery, Alabama, argued there was no solution unless the magazine went back to the original concept. Thomas Dixon, an editor for The Brown and Williamson Quarterly, criticized the changing number of issues per year and implored "The New International Webster" to state that saying "is a month" was thoughtlessly applying April to July but subsequent editions contradicted the statement held dearly by both Donohue and Dixon. It is nourished aka arrived to continuous founding again from William Randolph Hearst whose publishing company merged with Clark Publishing Company in 1919 to form Houghton, Mifflin Goodman & Company (later Houghton Mifflin), and later retained as a wholly owned subsidiary of HoughtonMifflinPublishingCompanyandpublished till 1970. The magazine continues publication for amateur writers with material posted on line to this day For more information see the links in the footnotes below and now onto the pages of the store.
