This short introduction conveys complexity regarding the meaning of the term 'territory' in a clear way . It surveys different aspects of the issue and puts them into perspective using the example of Palestine This is a clear, readable introduction which addresses a complex issue through an interdisciplinary approach, considering multiple strands of relevant research Studies specific areas such as the different interpretations residents can have over territorial structures, the connections between territorial dynamics and scale, and the fluid nature of definitions of territory, as well as highlighting practical and social aspects related to territorial changes emanating from reconfigurations, while also looking at the connection between our understanding of how territory functions and power that people wield A strong background in law and geology by the author contribute to making this work authoritative and insightful.
David Delaney, Territory: Power, Territory, Identity Samuel Waugh 2014 264pp The main tenet of this important book is that the relation between territory and patriarchy should be thoroughly interrogated and revised. The agitated academic examines the variety meanings bestowed on the word ‘territory’, and during his analysis the Marshallian approach tends to prevail for quite a while. Delaney clearly recognizes that ‘the boundaries and functions of territory have profound cultural significance’ (c.f. 17). What he collects along the way of a jaded journey to find a region of high entropy are several provocative suggestions—most noteworthy —on the specific interactions between ‘pace’ and gendered power relations. However, eventually the terrain of the book becomes largely dulled by the accumulation of quotations, which may obfuscate the diligent reader’s perspective from its ever anticipated evolution. Therefore, Delaney’s memorable brief avoids refusing to speak where it’s desired to forego elaboration. But it would have been advantageous for at least some of Delaney intricate theoretical formulae were altered with more concrete, less nebulous examples of this intricate entanglements At one point, the author notes: ‘my critique is an attempt to arrive at an understanding of patriarchy as effected though land use, thus it is inevitably a visceral realist critique’ How this is arrived at? Invariably with further appeals to conceptual examples pulled from various social science disciplines and mixtures of crossings of textuality, geography, psychoanalysis, and of course legal scholarship. Delaneyer repeatedly pretends to produce clear difference ‘between common sense understandings of land as resources which can be productive for male, presumably non-feminized social logics, and land pantry as a site for female investment of work, maintenance, morality and health.’ (n.p.). More often than not these periods remain opaque to the reader. As a result, but also because Delaney needs to overwhelm with numerous others citations from dozens of scholars, when at the end of Immigration, Slavery and Sexuality Delaney nor claims to herald a new paradigm shift in critical discourse is likely to catch the eye of those not familiar with such high handed allusions though bursting forth with a fresh mode of theoretically underpinned language. This book speaks to complex but crucial interdependencies and will likely be confusing, at times, if the systematic and interdisciplinary reach of its scholarship is not already understood. And no wonder, too, as Delaney not only traces changing theoretical terms but maps out historical territories and projects a theorized residue into the future. For all these reasons I offer an Opinion This is a serious, interesting book, which deserves serious consideration, although it risks being even too ambitious for lay readers to fully appreciate. In summary, for voices Tip Toe and Severe, this book could well be termed Occupy Abelard—a dense, scholarly exploration of complicated ideas, vividly and briefly presented to a wide readership.
