Billy Reed is a sheriff trying to keep the town apolitical, protecting them from hard times. "Mara" is Mara Copeln, a former resort chef/bartender who disappeared years ago with her most hated rival. She now looks like this because she owns the money of the criminal she ran away from and had to take refuge locally in a closed town far from prying eyes. The missing criminal is not decorative baggage and the townspeople are terrified. Multiple attempts at luring Mara away happen, with Reed leading them all along.
Mara is scared. Lucky she truly brought her daughter with her and isn't letting her go. Throughout the novel, cutaways to Rachel's school, activities and fights devote how the younger Copeln sister grew beside her mother in need and also the complicated relationship between Rachel and her own father. It will be even more complicated when they fight over the rules of the newly apparent union.
