Daniel Defoe, an English merchant, author, journalist and pamphleteer, was also known as a spy and was often imprisoned by the authorities. A large part of his popularity was due to his novel about the adventures of Robinson Cruso in the newly discovered island. This book, largely based on that novel, consists of various essays by Daniel Defoe on controversial topics where he argued that no moral stance could be completely correct. However, Defoe emphasized the need to live by common sense, and also hopes that his experience will convince people to live more peaceably and wholesomely.
