Trusting individuals with making choices about their own future, while frowning on appointing unelected bodies, technocrats, and the judiciary, belittle the democratic capacity of voters with a sense of self-importance.For all the talk of support for democracy, politicians seem to fall short on successive occasions. Limitations are neither a solution nor a mark of any progress towards a greater determination to support and respect true popular sovereignty. Instead we need to offer better options - more choices - rather than trying to take all away from those without choices.It is about fighting for tolerance, fairness, responsibility, and democracy…with no "ifs," "buts," or taking it back.
It’s easy to get bogged down in theoretical debates about power and decision-making when democracy can seem so clear-cut. Our democracy seems so laudable. But, it hasn’t always been great. Taking the recent EU referendum, British voters had the power to decide whether a United States of Europe was for them or against them, yet they chose to trust unelected elites over people who have lived there all their lives. So why do we keep returning to such dysfunctional models? The problems of our systems begin far upstream. Why did Western democracies fail us in 2016 the way they seem to have failed us before, when everybody supports democracy? Almost every politician on the west coast says they support democracy; yet you know what rhetoric sounds worse than the opposition saying that they don’t think the people should choose their leaders? When your leaders say that other people shouldn’t choose them.
