In November and December 2001, two seemingly unconnected pandemics exploded on a global scale and tore through societies the world over: one caused by unspeakable human suffering in the form of genocide, rape, murder, and genocidal intent, the other caused by fear and uncertainty because of the possibility that some still unidentified organism might spread throughout populations. Both were linked through the shocking and persistent image of a Middle Eastern face. They created a crisis of representation. This book assesses how coordinated attempts at control- and containment-oriented representation (up to and including biological warfare) gave way to humanitarian inquiries into need and quality of life until it became common cause to urge all parties to the Afghan conflict for reconciliation. It charts the historical ambivalence with which both the Taliban regime and the pro-Western interim government deployed testsimonies from ex-combatants to discredit or assure the other, questioning the degree of accuracy among the latter's claims (both the truth about terror and the representations of it), as well as the internal politics of interpretation that led to sharp discrepancies in the perceptions of danger and misperceptions of oppression in Afghanistan. It also raises questions about the cold war legacy of the far right's search for traitors among fellow ethnic German supporters to make the case for support for revanchist endeavors in Germany itself, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The contributors discuss the morphological and ideological consequences of these attempts to make sense of conflict.
