This volume covers quinolines in depth: methods of synthesis, chemical properties and reactivity, all pertinent aspects are thoroughly presented. Experimental techniques, together with mechanized procedures, such as those involving microwave radiations and ultrasound, receive full discussion. Data on biological and medicinal activities, as well as on reactivity with biological macromolecules (biological receptors, enzymes), are provided. An attempt is made to assess quantitatively the requirement of molecular designing for the various biological activities among quinolone derivatives.

In this installment the emphasis is placed on a survey of the quinolines bearing substituents elsewhere on the aromatic system that may be pharmaco-chemically significant for accessorizing biological activity patterns of the parent quinoline nucleus (the additional ring effects). Applications of quantum chemical methods in structure property relationship studies of these compounds are also covered.

This series anticipates the integration of information on specific classes of compounds which can offer researchers common threads for continued investigations into the complex field of biological phenomena and for revealing novel structures without significant synthetical difficulties. A glance at the literature reveals that the same synthetic transformation may lead to more than one quinolinium ionophore exhibiting different responses to pharmacological and species specificity. This study therefore underscores the importance of finding effective strategies for the design of biologically active quinoline derivatives.

The Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, since its inception, has been recognized as a cornerstone of heterocyclic chemistry. Each volume attempts to discuss all aspects – properties, synthesis, reactions, physiological and industrial significance – of a specific ring system. To keep the series up-to-date, supplementary volumes covering the recent literature on each individual ring system have been published. Many ring systems (such as pyridines and oxazoles) are treated in distinct books, each consisting of separate volumes or parts dealing with different individual topics. With all authors are recognized authorities, the Chemistry of Heterocyclic Chemistry is considered worldwide as the indispensable resource for organic, bioorganic, and medicinal chemists.
