Winter's Edge by Christina Medici

The story takes place directly after the events of Shattered Gate in the same world, all magic has ceased leaving the land vulnerable to supernatural hazards such as winter. It focuses on a young man named Gregory and the aftermath of the confrontation with Drashakar, and involves various characters from the original Novel including Ursala and Lathander.

Set on the edge of winter, Saint Justine and her companions begin their journey. They've escaped until now, but they know they are being hunted. As the wind picks up, blizzard conditions swallowing them, they only can hope that the ones they left holding the fort will be able to maintain it and not succumb. Crucial though Saint Justaine knows that some will perish out in the vagaries of winter never to be seen again, but she and her small band must push on forward. Setting in late December and with a new years day just over the horizon, there is very little time before all is lost and it is then that tragedy strikes. Saint Justine makes her way to the aid of a disheartened Duchy guard who has found a dog abandoned and starving outside the gates of Kooteys Hall. Already despairing about their prospects, poor old Jack was horrified when he realised the creature was mute and there was no sound of anyone who knew the dog nearby. He had been terribly distressed, almost on the verge of tears himself when Saint Justine arrived, only to find the wolf pup likewise distraught seeing his friend and mentor so abandoned, terrified and hurt. Reaching into her bag, Saint Justie finds a yo-yo and reveals it to the confused Jack and Gregory, trying to explain how it will help keep in touch, which appeared to meet with some trepidation from both. When it became evident that Gregory had a job to do on his own to unhook the bellows from a low wall and stage the zapper, while desperate for their help they cast about and found enough wood to begin setting up Jaccks old fire. The two Duke Guards set to building the fire and shortly thereafter, with Saint Johns help, a raft of sorts is hastily improvised from ancient pieces of jet ski lolled near a jetty. As soon as the solid log pile had erupted into flame the puppy literally leapt into the air in joy. In Cymmian, it would have been referred to Clinc Crocum, when the sun comes out after a nasty shower and from that point they proceeded down river pigging along happily, feeding along the way, and gathering ale. Managed to stay ahead but coming under attack by the órcs, who continue to pursue but their numbers begin to thin. Eventually they make it to winter reclusive Border Kingdom and set a course across its snow covered landscape. Despite winter holding back any creature who would not the small group of six make great challenges and they gradually whittle down the crippling cold which follows the borders no matter where they go. Not that it matters, for they have no form of shelter that won't blow away in a good wind -- and what use is finding shelter without food upon which to spend the night or water from which to drink.
