"Postcard From The Past"
With an introduction by Mark Haddon, Postcards from the Past is a collection by Tom Jackson of amazing, eccentric and real-life messages from old postcards' backsides. Here's what Tim Gerritsen writes on the Reaktor blog: "Sublime humor" says Jason Hazeley. "My favourite Twitter page is now my new favourite book," says Jill Mansel.", "This book delivers absolutely every time," writes Holly Walsh, ".These are ghosts from their childhood.” Says Robin Ince, "Disturbing comedy: a piercing glimpse into the stubbornly narrow minds of (the often far-away) Brits", adds Charlie Higson, ".A taste of heaven' " says Rachel Johnson, "Poignantly creepy". Samira Ahmed "One of Twitter's most sublime concepts: they arrive like mini avant garde Alan Bennett plays” says Danny Baker. "It's beautiful, inspiring, educational and hilarious," Emma Freud adds. "The most sad and funny publishing experiment you'll ever come across/ "Says Owen Hatherly, author of Batman and Robin ", Hilariously captivating, silly poetry and mysteriously heart-wrenching" Danny Wallace picks up. "A unique collection of artistry," concludes James O'Brien.
P R E F A C E B Y In this book, I'll be honest, I thought it would be a little ridiculous. But then I found it - the startling number of beautiful, heartwarming, and strangely moving comments. From the oblique courtship plea of "You stood by me, you held me close," to the terrifying glimpse into the heart of hell: "Your accusing face. Your accusations sounded all too accurate. They were accurate," the mash-up sheets reveal details that are somewhat worrying (hello chopsticks yet?) but also many just windingly funny - far from something I assumed to be the fate of the anonymous card held by many a graduate as he steps for the last time across his high school rugby field. Have an Alfred Hitchcock novel written every year; no sooner had that thought crossed over my mind than it seemed to materialise in this eclectic collection, edited with wit and style by Tom Jackson and Mark Haddon. My advice to anyone interested is to dip in here at the opening glimmerings of uncertainty ("Where the heaven can crouch below window glass") and discover both humour and longing marked into their own rich texture before whipping around, trying and failing, to find stability in our literal walks. M A K E - T. H. E. H A D D O N What can I say about the distinctive style or editing work that people love or hate? Because, I mean seriously, I almost guarantee you'd rather more people hated it rather then loved it. So why have I said "people love it"? Because I have as well. Wonder why? I would say that it's because the editing is never obvious. Less is more, after all. But less isn't necessarily silent in itself. Because the smoothed edges and rich valleys seen shining through these excerpts are keys into real world commentary - fictional and non-fictional formations take form and change here. And we recognise, not less than we recognise when someone is using their imagination and peppering their language similarly arduous with metaphorical shards. Of their unkempt nature and plural pronouns. Cosmetic editing or not, this project saw readers find truth included and told through the glossy windows of strange tranquility they reveled in. Closing thoughts, perhaps the hardest part to come up with after initiating a conversation as long as the expanse of these introductions. I want to say, "Many of my earliest memories of car rides involve others silently reading books, talking out loud, or simply listening, while the radio murmured," and then wonder if I got carried away or should just get back to staying in the thread - but it's surely not everyone reading this thinks that starting out their day like that sounds monotonous and mundane.
