Sidney Kew, owner and occupant of the Kew—London coachman's inn following Sir Marcus' death, is more than willing to cooperate with Inspector Davidson when he calls upon him shortly after the arrival in Kew of a trio of suspicious reporters.\nTheir presence out of season and an unexplained killing of a guide who has since vanished eliminate any lingering vestiges of hope that the murders of Lady Carstairs, Jane Murdoch, and Boris Grigoriev have finally been wrapped up by Scotland Yard.\nWith a bounty placed on all three of them by a mysterious golden despot—blamed for the a violent smash and grab at the London Underground site known as the DIA, "disinformation and intrigue agency" and despite many competing theories as to who might be behind assorted extralegal retaliatory actions—Davidson decides it would be best for everyone concerned if he persuaded Amery Crighton, an Englishman who bought the Kew property recently, to deliver the three reporters to the Scotland Yard's Newton House headquarters, while they seek a full confession in a police station early and without delay.\nIf Amery can be convinced to do so then Davidson will question every single passerby in Kew until they all present pictures of the same man or men responsible for repeatedly putting both the guests and staff of his establishment in grave danger.\nSeeking advice on this unpalatable
