"Pipacs, the Money Thief" is a highly anticipated novel by Hungarian-American author Jenő Rejtő, originally titled "Saccaróki, a vad szerencséjérös" ("The Excellent Money Thief"). The story is set in 19th-century Budapest and follows the adventures of a young thief named Meek, who begins his career as a safecracker when no other job opportunities exist.
Throughout the book, Meek faces many challenges including finding new methods to steal money, managing his comrade-in-crime Spanky and his relationship with his abusive father and slow-witted sister. He also encounters different characters such as a pimp, a prostitute and a newspaper editor, whom he initially mistakes for a dangerous mobster.
Rejtő's writing style is lively and unpredictable, combining dark humor, sexual intrigue, dramatic turn of events, hilarious comic relief, love and heartbreak as well
Pipacs (The Gifted Banker), an omnibus volume of three works by literary great Rejtő, consists of two novellas, and the eighth, and final, volume in the series, which explores the mystery surrounding Zsigmond Pányi in exquisite detail.
