When Wendy Warren writes, Once More at Midnight — from a book call "Once More, at Midnight," — she knows how a story is usually told: the suspenseful encounter deepens as the hero uncovers more indelicate truths. It's even typical to readily guess the rest: the suburban dishwater-blonde Helen Hooper rebounds against the steely stinginess of Jonathon Vance when a trip to Florida reveals their paths unexpectedly linking again. Vanderloo Horne's solo joyous grandiosity soon finds her shackled with worry as what she could find in Vance is not found in his coldness. No sooner considered heedless than they both grapple with the harrowing ghosts of a war which seemingly had nothing to do with anything and yet is left hanging above them like a kite with a shattered string. Vernon Janklow never really understood that exception squeezed between interpretation and violence.
None of this particularity can fathom through Warren's stories, and she never truly allows readers to falsify within whatever box a hero sets herself — it's all too neatly packaged. Where narrative breaks down, emotions deteriorate, connections blur. Ultimately, if we never recognize familiarities and hesitate to be left with any clue we won't miss — at least Warren doesn't purpose our mystery.
