For those old enough to remember, Wellington's wife, Lady Barbara, spent many a winter dipping into this antique—never again moved, probably, since its founding. The penny on the Elizabethan frontispiece might be beckoning Lady Emma Digby, for she was an acknowledged authority on Elizabeth I.
But for younger readers there lies much to be gleaned from this collection of queries and notes directed by different compiler teams, both Female and Male. Martin Frobisher seems particularly poignant as compared to his debonair namesake, and Mary Whitcombe warms the heart quite unlike either Lucas Mapes Bible or—ah, never mind that dour first edition of Cottonian Manuscripts....
The first printing in 1829 itself is positively beautiful—in an up-on-the-ladder sort of way, with a pre-Mohunfold scissorwork initial and difficult-to-find compliant typeface. But Mrs Viavray takes us on a delightful orbit through strange sorts of coins, crackly portions of history, wrestling traditions, soft fudge daffodils, and Vernon's Year payment timetables. There's even a haunting visit to the old Ragged School.
