This book's structure resembles more an encyclopedia or textbook than a magazine article. It covers not one topic, but ten, in a comprehensive, solid manner. Making connections between concepts and summarizing important takeaways in manageable little chunks makes learning the material digestible and easy to grasp. Additionally, each chapter references common scenarios for the issue at hand, making it easier to apply what's being discussed to real-life situations. One downside could be the length of some chapters; it seems almost a bit unnecessary to spend that much time covering the measure theory concept at length. Another potential criticism I might have is the lack of problem sets and simulations for assessing and deploying what has been learned to practice. While the book does contain 'walkthroughs' and 'sample use cases' for most topics, I think more could be done to drill the reader into getting their hands dirty with some hands-on solutions on vulnerability assessments and network attacks. Finally, while the font size and the text size are both appropriate, it would be great if the layout of the book allowed for more space to underline key terms and concepts, especially at first reading. For someone new to the topic of network security, phrases like "stateful firewall" or "comScore," could become tenuous if not properly demystified or defined. Having those concepts explained once more on a concept map or perhaps a bulleted list would aid greatly in getting an overall perspective.

Matthew Strebe
The world of IT is always evolving, but in every area there are stable, core concepts that anyone just setting out needed to know last year, needs to know this year, and will still need to know next year. The purpose of the Foundations series is to identify these concepts and present them in a way that gives you the strongest possible starting point, no matter what your endeavor. Network Security Foundations provides essential knowledge about the principles and techniques used to protect computers and networks from hackers, viruses, and other threats. What you learn here will benefit you in the short term, as you acquire and practice your skills, and in the long term, as you use them. Topics covered include: Why and how hackers do what they do How encryption and authentication work How firewalls work Understanding Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) Risks posed by remote access Setting up protection against viruses, worms, and spyware Securing Windows computers Securing UNIX and Linux computers Securing Web and email servers Detecting attempts by hackers
