"Nanny Makes Three" is the third installment of the "Shining Through" series by Joan Kilby. The novel follows the adventures of Melissa Doyle, a talented but naïve young woman, as she takes up a job as a nanny in the remote town of Pine Valley, California.

Greg Fallon, who owns the town's struggling school, asks Melissa to take care of his daughter, Alice Ann, while his wife is away on business. Despite Melissa's lack of experience, the family soon realizes that she is an ideal candidate for the job. Alice is kind and sweet, while Greg is attracted to Melissa's honesty and simplicity.

The story follows Alice's role transition from baby to toddler to preschooler, where she learns about friendship, independence, and responsibility. While there, Melissa discovers something unexpected that begins a journey of self-discovery and emotional growth. However, as Alice gets older and starts school, Melissa must find balance between keeping her life in order and learning how to deal with the unpredictable and terrifying changes of puberty. In the meantime, Gregory matures his relationship with Melissa both personally and professionally, ultimately leading to a series of surprising and sometimes unexpected turns.

"Nanny Makes Two" follows its predecessor from a different viewpoint, leaving some of the same characters and presenting new ones to bring new perspectives onto each character's individual problem. Melissa finally has a large goal that she can dedicate her time towards, putting all the manys she has learned in previous books into perspective.

Furthermore, "Nanny's Life" traces the beginning of Alice's day, first showing Melissa waking up in her house to help her daughter get ready for school. Next, it shows a scene inside Melissa's home after the hard morning is over, with Alice waiting for Melissa by the window and a letter reading, "Dear Alice, I'll be with you pretty soon." Melissa helps Alice in the kitchen while they talk about their day and make plans for later. Then, you'll see Alice walking through town and talking to her friends, all of which impact Melissa more than you think.

Ultimately, the book ends with a question whether and how it will continue after adulthood, involving the author's theoretical ideas on the "different races" of human beings, i.e. personality types. The short stories "Melissa's Words" "Alice's Mood" and "Gregory'
