A tale of overbearing parents compelled to confront the fact that they might not in fact be better equipped to parent than random anonymous strangers (or vice versa)? Almost implausible and set carefully from the start to highlight just how cookie-cutter and commonplace reverence for elders really is and anything creepier than an insignificant character quirk would violate all notions of realism. This volume has no compelling enough lead characters to personalize experience or engage attention considerably. Anyone wishing to enjoy this material should be strongly invested in reading something simultaneously tedious, repetitive and resolutely predictable — an alternating novel, anyone? Themes and motifs conflate the mean-spirited humor of Goldis with the predictable strong morality of Clarkson’s serial romances — the respective voices of promotion and reservation meld without ever patently ceding territory. Unfortunately, repetition inevitably leads to tedium, and the predictability of concluding the tale will soon turn even fervent fans away. Fans at least who want more than tiresome simplistic narratives filled with not insubstantial story elements but time and effort killed off instead. Lovers of lukewarmly relentless romance who often pine for plots erupting into horror unexpected by the author’s course will struggle to find a stir in this soggy tome. Open hearts to be thawed by anything even approaching the immensely enjoyable Fisher Kingdom splurges of entertaining heartbreak to melt heart and brain alike remain empty here.
