"Montana Cowboy Daddy" by Linda Ford takes on the challenges and realities of living in a tight-knit community in Montana. In the book, Dawson Marshal, a single man who had lost his wife, has a one-year-old daughter who he needs to take care of. After no success with women out of the city, he takes in the young Isabelle Redfield, who comes from a wealthy family, to see to his niece. However, this new addition to Dawson's life complicates things a bit.
Isabelle's world is one of luxury and wealth. After her parents' divorce left both her and her siblings in poverty and without a stable home, Isabelle had been raised in care until recently, when her uncle approached her. She had never seen the Montana of which Dawson had spoken, but knows only an early-20th-century America where wealth lies in tangible possessions and a good education. Whereas Dawson, raised on a ranch that was passed down to him by grandfather, is comfortable with his own surroundings and dedicated to himself and his daughter. Still, as the two develop a friendship, they must learn that relationships and ties are forged not by wealth or education, but by hard work, loyalty, and mutual trust.
So as Isabelle enters this foreign and challenging west, she realizes that value comes not only from material things. The people of Montana, and Dawson specifically, values their land, weather, and those who work to bring value to their lives. Here, too, Isabelle must find a place, and believe that she can contribute to making this rugged and respected community prosper.
