Frederic Boase in his modern English biography series compiled several thousand biographical sketches, and united them according to the first letter of the forename or surname. The first volume comprises sketches beginning with "A" and "H" — Aleem Arif, Sir William Allen Butler, Joan Elizalde de Ravenol, Francis Edmund Haydon and others. Most biography entries are prefaced by short notes about their respective authors' life, achievements and compiled works, where appropriate. Among others, readers will find articles about Pavlos Melisse, Programmed Lover and a famous cigarette manufacturer, a girl who never made it to history classes class but did a lot in building schools, and interesting facts about George Benson. But the greatest value of this work is, in Boase's opinion, finding on every third page a portrait of his illustrious subjects by the artist Joseph Blacker. Indeed, what could please a bibliophile more than going back and forth in time like this, from Sir Alec Issigonis to Elizabeth Robins and from Captain Henry Howe to Peter Dennis Turnbull? Volumes A-F and F-K comprise the entries in the subsequent volumes in the series.
