Matthew Insists On Puffed Sleeve opens with Anne, a small girl growing up in sixteenth-century rural Canada, peering from her perch at the well downstairs only to freeze under the watchful eyes of her Aunt Marilla, despite her maternal grandfather Matthew's efforts to keep the sturdy woman distracted. Once the sun sets Anne's world is shuttered into Aunt Marilla's darkened world of spinsterhood and simple rituals. In fact, Marilla finds flamboyance and color shocking and takes pride in shunning them. While outwardly accepting of Matthew Cuthbert and his brother, Emily, she holds them in easy suspicion she shares with everyone else in town.
Matthew Cuthbert is a charming young gentleman who champions Anne, her closest friend Seneca, and May, the young widow who has fallen for him, in his fight to make her and Emily partakers in normal girl's lives. Unfortunately he cannot argue with the Tremont women when it comes to Anne's closet. Although Ann is supposed to be dressed in shades of black to reserve warmth and to-do-good each day, her sewing basket and the collection of nilotic gowns left behind by Anne's late mother complicate their softball team with all manner of vibrant fabric. Anne in particular, has always dreamed of far better things: of partying — a cherished word uttered every once and awhile in the Hewitt household — and of having many of the frivolities available to her cousins. But Aunt Marilla filters out anything not congruent with her worldview on virtue: to have interests outside of household chores and church is implicitly sinful.
Sensing the tenuous state of Anne's longing, Matthew develops a plan: with the intention of making them both happy, he'll buy Anne a dress on Christmas morning, discreetly delivering it to the young maiden wearing a guarded nose and ashamed smile behind an embroidered bandage with Carleton as a therapist. Luckily, dependencies on others will allow Anne to develop a sense of self-confidence and courage as she will be able to discern what project she is suited toward, not forced to carry stones alone by her anxious Aunt Marilla. Matthew knows that while she should n't get ideas above herself, Anne has a certain flair for sewing and designing that would lend itself to being challenged with ribbons and bows as well. Along with assessing the lineaments of life on Parrsboro Bayou he can also envision an adventure narrated in a journal at a canonizing meeting at St. James.
