Книга "Life.
How can we understand life as two modes of being, that of material substance and that of subjective experience? Should we privilege one mode or the other, biological process or life-world? Is it possible, in fact, to comprehend both together, thus reconciling the natural and humanistic? In his thought-provoking book, Didier Fassin asks and tries to answer these questions by developing a range of concepts including "forms of life", the "ethics of life," and "politics of life." These notions unfold from ethnographic study of migratory movements and various other modes of unequal life among refugees, those seeking asylum, and their families. Problematic tensions in contemporary societies for the treatment of human beings enhance moral economies of life. Assembling these disparate elements, Fassin assembles an imposing mosaic of inequality of life that is more revealing than merely considering the material or semiotic aspect of life alone. Here, we see an excellent deployment of Bourdieu's concept of field: an interdisciplinary ferment of philosophy, anthropology, history, and political theory that informs a robust critique of social life and how humans experience it through these different aspects of life. Long a critic of sociological approaches to human rights, the spirit of engagement and guestimations in Fassin's work is refreshing. The work thus paradoxically exemplifies a major philosophical undertaking while also bringing to light unique insights into their articulation. This book is indispensable in the understanding of the nature of life itself and should be a seminal text of distinction for all philosophers, sociologists, and anyone interested in culture and society.

Didier Fassin
How can we think of life in its dual expression, matter and experience, the living and the lived? Philosophers and, more recently, social scientists have offered multiple answers to this question, often privileging one expression or the other – the biological or the biographical. But is it possible to conceive of them together and thus reconcile naturalist and humanist approaches? Using research conducted on three continents and engaging in critical dialogue with Wittgenstein, Benjamin, and Foucault, Didier Fassin attempts to do so by developing three concepts: forms of life, ethics of life, and politics of life. In the conditions of refugees and asylum seekers, in the light of mortality statistics and death benefits, and via a genealogical and ethnographical inquiry, the moral economy of life reveals troubling tensions in the way contemporary societies treat human beings. Once the pieces of this anthropological composition are assembled, like in Georges Perec’s jigsaw puzzle, an image appears: that of unequal lives.
