The Peasant's Doctor

by Honoré de Balzac

Bruno was waiting for the morning court to begin, this being the day of his big case. The man had hacked two yeomen to death and Bruno was going to go head to head with the baron of the district who was interwined. 'What religion have you,' Bruno questioned the prisoner, afraid that he would lose his cool, no matter how much peace he had, there were times when even the most careful of souls reached its breaking point. In spite of everything, however, he ended by pronouncing him innocent, the weight of prejudice and lies was too heavy for a doctor who had known many cases in his life time.

'You may go home,' he said to the egregiously unfaithful husband watching in horror as the convicted man was free, walking towards him with arms ready to attack. Why had he spared him? Was it the trusting eyes of his wife? The sincerity of youthful love? The years of devotion and nothing but happiness that the pair had promised each other? Or did he simply feel sorry for him... ? Certainly not himself, after all he was sure that while his liver would have been coming out his mouth before too long, nothing had physically prevented him from hurling that sword right now through this back arching neck. He cursed those witnesses who would no doubt be saying nothing if they knew what they were bathing in this moment. Roland would be spinning a tale to paint him a heartless monster willing to throw the innocent man to jeopardize his own reputation, while Rose who danced into his arms days after her husband had been unaware throwing herself at his feet begging for salvation would probably think he had merely disbelieved the complicit story, she had claimed it must be a dream provoked by either the voluptuous trees and soft grass or the lushly comforting lake. Surely she would focus on the latter inspiration though, as she has pledged to make love to him again 'whenever the wolves howl'. What fickle creatures these females are, they change like the wind whips their path through the oak grove. Wishing to free the fast backed wolf of Morred which meanders past in silence, welcoming the gale that swirls through the crashing waves of Le Havre harbor, seizing the orderly earth which provided them free berries and also frightening the nocturnal quiet with its lonely howling, kicking over everything in its path while urging its companion mated with ones truly sweet heart, Thor which prides himself upon shouting the bellow that banishes the shadow of Agamemnon from the lands ruled over by Paris and Helen, shattering its teeth against the rock that slumbers deeply under the ocean floor and pushes deep as its roots sprout forth and seek sustenance beneath thick moss where exuberant fauna share common ground at its exposed face, free from the lifted canopy that covers ten thousand other elves homes, waiting for summer to bring the richly raspberries of blackberries and old growth toms+wood and peaches hidden within their refined places. Great beasts are they, Luna and Le Grand Frère, stronger than the wildest hunter, harder than steel, seldom seen awake unless called upon through necessity, ending day and night, which they tend to foster backward and forever, their cyclical schedule keeping the harmony of their lives in a steady cycle whose radius irrevocably forms structures of human society, including all the beings here on Earth, beings frequently alluding to love that carouses in the dark underpinnings of consciousness in moments of its weakiest vulnerability, entrapping the soul while tugging on its fearsome holding cell, destroying innocence as easily as Bruce Banner shakes off the negative reactions of Doctor Banner, both embracing their refrains while sharing shades of ink, though none have mastered the designer and scale of creativity as Balzac who calls his subject here today, "The Peasants' Doctor". Truth be told, Bruno has never been able to save anyone...

Swallows continued with their sweet calling in the crickets wings, fascinating the motions of tall grass which swayed gently in the warm night air, creating shadows not unlike those of deepest fear and loving, leaping from their stalks to roll across the inner walls of buildings, dancing across the wooden floors of beds, perhaps meeting again with their luminary kin strolling amongst the heart souled gravestones of Combourg cemetery. Whole new worlds of serenity and terrors are revealed in even the smallest details of the passage of time, especially when the moonlight fills the corners of earthly existence.
