This book explores Kyrgyzstan's unique and restricted world of nomadic people and their applied arts. What we thought to be merely a scantily explored aspect of Central Asian cultural history and design, notably artistic metalwork, is an arsenal of raw materials certain populations surely developed millennia ago on the steppe continually reinvigorate. In this guide we bring out their skills in copper, necklaces, hair pieces, loops, big looking coils and blobs. As is traditional the artifacts are described first, followed by a page explaining their artwork, sheen and function. The undeniable spirit is evident through many specimens; beads, silver ornaments of horses, whips, combs, and both male and female waistbands. Most of this small fortune of craftsmanship are slow to appear aligned with urban life, leaving ethnic groups to restrict themselves to marginal practices or creating close-knit enclaves outside the scrutinizing eye of others. Nevertheless holders of such artisan expertise can continue to hold on the rich strands of folkloric design conveying timeless associations of Mongolia, ancient habitation and hisse products.
