Henrietta
This big, bright edifice would parade its class and position all over the neighborhood. The houses were all small and sleepy with wood, iron, and age, but there was much more glitter and ornaments outside Henrietta’in 210 room mansion. Women bustled around in the gardens and guests filled the ballroom for every holiday, leaving the house feeling hectic for days.
Inside, the floors hummed beneath their perfecting feet, slow-moving servants shaped suspicions of slovenliness, while lace-shrouded windows seemed to stare back- mr. Henrietta had spent marvelous sums of wealth on the visuals. To the left a gallery showcased the greatest achievements of Henrietta, while the ceilings adorned paintings that were no doubt costing a fortune to imbue life into every peaceful corner. One large portrait stood peculiarly isolated, flanked by empty walls, as if it was waiting to be completed. While much of the rest of the home sparkled, this painting seemed exhausted. It was faded and strikes at the eye of every passerby, somehow reminiscent of a scraped knee or cold day inside.
It was a picture of Isabella, Henrietta’s bride, and it had stayed the same since the night they wed. They onlookers believe there is sadness displayed in every line, of standing side by side, in the formal pose expected of royalty. Someone had dedicated the piece, for the walls caried a signature in hard brushstrokes appended in the lower left corner. “Henrietta, 18 Feb 72”. If any kind words travelled into the little frame, they began fading soon after.
Well, it’s the spooky old mansion and Henrietta herself that lead on to our story. Isabella never really fit in to the clubbable heart of Henrietta's home even from the beginning, and here she would be isolated on this wayward frame. Someone told a story through Isabella's familiar face that no one was brave enough to add context, because the harsh light of memory truly chaps and burns exposed skin.
The muddy street outside was dotted with wooden shacks and trudging townfolk. These people gently spoke to each other through trades of goods and gossip, their faces and hands cracking under the effort of any play of emotion. Small gatherings of bonfires, caught up in groups and families, wept warm needs over soon-going nights.
When all else fails, we look for people like us. A dark alley concealed empty backpacks, discarded shoes, and forgotten love letters stied on the cobblestone dust. Life would wing here late at night, when the curfew courtiers had long turned away.
One evening, hidden down this alleyway should have been cantered smoothly through life's written line for Henrietta and Isabella as well. Some dark termites of fate, molded by unpunished choices between miserliness in the woods or the sweet life within town helped undo anything anyone attempted to spell out.
