Jakob the Last is a novel by Peter Rosegger, published in 2012. It is set in a post-apocalyptic future when humanity has suffered a catastrophic event and the surviving population has been reduced to a handful of isolated communities.
The story follows Jakob, a young man from one such community, who lives in fear of the outside world and its unknown dangers. However, his peaceful life is threatened by a band of raiders who come to his land in search of food, shelter, and women.
With his limited resources and the help of his only friend, Walth, Jakob must confront his fears and take up the challenge of defending his home against the enemy. Throughout the journey, he finds himself slowly empowered by the sense of responsibility and honour for those he loves – and together they overcome their adversaries before the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.
