Thomas is a young man fleeing from the authorities, when he happens upon a delightful couple: the Moerfield's. He finds himself being lured into a peculiar gingerbread house, much like Hansel who was seduced by the witch in a gingerbread cottage. The Moersfield's lavishly spoil Thomas with their best food until he moves in with them and becomes an integral member of their family. However, they yearn for a son but Thomas proves to be a terrible fit for the role. Even though they have started to see him as their son, the Moersfield leave him devastated when their expectations of him are disappointed. This story draws on many prominent motifs from Grimm's Fairy Tales and pines for the adventurous nature of those characters.
