Heartbreak, love, loss and devotion—that's the central theme of this novel, If Ever I fall, which has been described as a heart-rending piece of storytelling. Far from being just another depressing dramatic climax featuring fictionalised characters in the scheme of a melodrama, however, author S. D. Robertson walks a fine line between harsh truths, tragic errors, and an underlying, lingering hope for redemption.
The story begins when we get introduced to Dan Waters, a career electrician whose life starts to unravel when a family heritage home is taken from him and his business is mortgaged. Walking hand in hand with the emotional rollercoaster ride that our protagonist delves into, readers are introduced to Maria, played by a well-woven ensemble cast of emotions. The story of their unlikely friendship unfolds as the pages turn, as she immerses herself into her master's letters in an attempt to grapple with feelings of liberation and sonnet-like recessions as her path diverges into elusive panels of unknown passions, morality, and the transience of space itself. For his part in this equation, Jack Sadler (whose status in life remains ambiguous, leaving the doors of the reader’s imagination wide-open) makes their journey into dislocation all the more challenging by enquiring: How can real time play out in a landscape we come to understand as collective fantasy if the protagonist has no clear notion of who they are, where they have been, or what they came here to achieve.
In a terrifically written soundscape, Robertson forces not only each member of the downtrodden trio to confront their most intimate demons but also their longings, hopes, and binders of love that tell the present reticence of fragile hearts compelling on every conceivable page. Whether it be the palpable building of tension between Dan and Maria, seemingly not spoken about, only gleaned through fleeting gestures and ebbing hopes, or the dissecting of the razor's edge between love and loss impacting our panellists' thoughts and formulations, the novel moves fluidly from one section affluent in secondary plotlines to another, and just when the oxygen seems to be depleting, tension is briefly defused through a greenhouse flash before it culminates into another heavyweight heartbreak to test the blackened souls on their stumps to see whether any new chapter can possibly begin again.
As much as the novel sends shivers down the spine, If Ever (sic) I Fall is not just a brooding readbook; it also serves as an effective narrative at its core. Again reminiscent of a book of poetry - so evocative and scanning with lovelorn echoes - the novel portrays Dan as constantly penning love letters to his wife and son, effectively forcing a sense of lucidity on the idea of professional colleagues and familiars (Rebecca, Dave, Damien) whom readers initially tend to assume cannot be expected to capture the tender depths of now emotion-corroded men of heart (not to mention the wonderful role of Kathryn Hughes' wonderful Furies Injury For Here). This minimalist prose lends itself well into a contemplative mode and remains insightful and profound as multiple layers beneath the surface are tested with intensely rendered, above and beyond sentimentality, complexities.
