This collection brings together original essays by leading scholars of literature which formulate new approaches to the work of William Shakespeare. It features contributions by twelve key authorities in creative writing, literature, culture and theory.
Each essay has been written with a specific topic in mind, chosen according to a criterion devised by the collection's editor, which has allowed great diversity in the book. The SOAS is tremendously thankful to those who have contributed essays: Professor Robert DeFina; Professor Hugh Dryden; Canon Professor Jacob M. Teitelbaum; Professor Jonathan Reed; Professor Mark Leiren-Duval; Anna Richardson; Dr Victoria Newton; Jacob Jowett; Adam Phillips; Lesley Kinter; Lydia Feldman; Canopy Publishing; Salt Publishing; and Somerset Publishing. Each essay opens with an autobiographical introduction explaining the context behind each author's particular choice of topic and the reason why they were asked to contribute. The range of essays produced are unique in their breadth, tackling subjects as wide ranging as Shakespearean comedy, sonnet twenty-nine and 'Shakespeare and modern secularism'.
The purpose of the collection, argues the editor, is to offer not a collective response to one decisive unitary proposition, but to emphasise the complexity and variety of approaches to reading Shakespeare, revealing a dynamic approach in which all essays interlink. Rather than shunning discursive rigour, the book encourages readers to choose a coherent position in response which might both respect the authority of the texts while also catering empathetically to their own sense of reading pleasure. The essays in the collection deliberately invite readers to engage in extended debate about their own readings, thus asserting their identity as a reader committed both to scholarship and empathetic engagement with the texts.
