This book explores the history of the Sun God Horus and the Moon God Set – fictionalized in the myth as rivals for the throne of Egypt. Written from the ancient Egyptian perspective, it’s a fascinating glimpse at beliefs that have perished long ago.
Horus saw himself as protector of the people of Egypt, championing against tyranny and corruption by Set. By comparison, Set was depicted as despicable, unquestioningly advancing his power and willing to go to any end to attain it. Set was associated with the season of drought, inflicting food shortages and hardship on his subjects. His reign is seen as the beginning of decline and chaos for the Kingdom. Set and Horus represented animosities that are pervasive within human soul, with moral ambiguity on both sides.
Often these motifs are examined through the lens of Christianity taking into account the idea that Jesus challenged Satan and won, and is thus able to subvert the worst in people. Yet Horus and set exemplify the same theme, raw conflict until one side is removed. Whilst other cultures have originated gods which embodied warlike or destructive traits, Horus offers an interesting reflection of how people see conflict, judging sides, and in terms of a more ultimate struggle between good versus evil, within the context of politics, economics and psychology.

Описание книги от Gertcel Davydov
Horus and Set were mortal enemies who embodied the timeless struggle between good and evil. When Set killed Osiris and became the supreme ruler of Egypt, he raised taxes, and the lives of ordinary Egyptians became unbearably difficult. Horus, the grown son of Osiris and Isis, brought his claim to the throne to the Council. The Council ruled in favor of Set, but Horus had no intention of accepting this decision, and so the two became embroiled for years in their struggle for the Egyptian throne.
