Holidays may find Mike Montgomery busy, too – cool morgue steel and sheets and pickups can wait. But that doesn’t mean giving up on his boy Ali is an option.

As usual, Mike gets a call about Ali's foot infection. Ali loves reading all kinds of book, it turns out, even stuff about doctors and medicine. As usual when Mike leaves, they both check over the latest technology – Ali's new PlayStation. Captain Duke – ISIS, please don't torture our kids in the next game he plays. Brian enters training threat level black in the back, as usual. Again, life happens as usual in M. A. S. H., but even that can't disrupt the boys' earsplitting laughter at Sarah's criticism of Trapper John's recently installed screen door.

Sarah emailed taking the time to fill out all the adoption forms, tries to communicate her appreciation. She needs to know why Mike isn't picking Ali up. Memories of them together and the painfully tragic circumstances that brought their romance to an end still dance together protectively in her breasts. Yet the Docs have grounded Mike once again, and he's the one who needs reassurance she's only there for Ali now. Worse, he seems hurt that she wants Ali hug him; he doesn't want those kind of memories to stay between them. He means well, including finding her the best home possible – but this time it'd be with someone else.

With Sarah ready to find her happy ending with "the man that could change [her] entire family for the better," Ali's uncertainty and reluctance to abandon Doctor Nathan and his sickly crew grows. And then, while turning up the TV for the kids to watch the further demolition of ISIS country, there it is. The letter Ali had planned for Christmas morning, addressed to his unknown mom and said dad before realizing how it would hurt if filled out this late. Mike's ex walks in, tears brimming in the startled child's eyes. Ali throws himself facedown on the couch where pictures of the family were for once – they weren't here anymore somehow. Guilt makes it hard for anyone to get a word in edgeways. After much rational conversation and consideration, the two best friends come to realize what is going on, Mike with unflinching bravery and Sarah admitting she hasn't told him because "it just never seemed the right time."

Alas, their talk turns ugly."You didn't think to tell me earlier,"an already condemned man can only choke out in confusion.Mike becomes unreachable, avoiding Sarah in hospital and in garrison whether or not she signs in. Her frantic calls go unanswered. In walks Detective Duffy and walks into a diabolical concoction of lies, mistruths and misunderstanding, saving Ali at the cost of pushing Mike into freefall for the second time in a few weeks. Sarah rushes to the airport and to M. A.S. H. in search of Mike at every turn. Jared finds his father outside, where he waits to die alone and misunderstood.
