It is not easy being authoritative or above judgement when it comes to evaluating books in the English language. The fact that an author has chosen to write many thousands of words about the lives and times of a long dead European royalty does not automatically result in a book worth reading. Although history books are undoubtedly an area where the writing can be extremely readable if the author possesses strong organisational skills and the ability to viscerally convey believable characters, there so many distorted histories still appearing in hardcover editions well after their original publication years. Considering the reputation of the writer Thomas Carlyle who produced this volume of ‘The Life of Frederick II’, the task becomes even more difficult. There are very few things more unwelcome than having an opinion on a secondary work whose main idea has the potential to change your entire worldview and yet every attempt to put words to paper results in failed attempts at comprehension. Well there is one constant which cannot be discounted, though, and that is ignorance; there has to be some form of starting point with which an understanding can be reached. At the bottom of a really long list of dubious acquisitions that mysteriously found their way onto my bookshelf, this mammoth tome may as well emerge almost like a mythical tale, right as I begin to grasp its true meaning. With the phrase, “my endeavours ended in failure”, washed from the mind like so much cerebral serum, the possibilities all open up like internet searches rendering copious amounts of new information to await further exploration. What would a historical fiction without crafting involve? On a final note, thank the omnipresent Lord for a five second internet cache, which is firmly telling me that the subject matter of this book, was published precisely centuries ago in 1855 AD, leaving me grateful for the next return trip down memory lane. It would appear, perhaps it is all hopeless after all.
