Melissa James's novella is set in the early 1950s in the small town of Little Beach, Illinois. The story follows two brothers, Mark and Kevin, who are living in the home that their father bought after he married his housekeeper Diane.

Kevin owns the house with his wife Jane, while Mark is more of a flakey sort who spends his time making games for little kids. Even though he is living with them on a permanent basis, he chooses not to live in Kevin and Jane's new, home. Instead, he stubbornly moves back to his childhood home next to the beach and spends his days fishing for sea gulls. This makes things difficult for Kevin as he finds it harder to entertain his own guests in the same house as his brother.

When Mark drowns trying to rescue a chick, the whole town comes together to raise money for funeral arrangements. However, there is a problem, as the funeral involves the traditional burial of the body without use of an actual coffin. Kevin's heart is torn between his love of his brother and the need to carry out the funeral in accordance with Jewish tradition.

In a clever twist, the story ends with a different funeral ending, one that we, as readers, were n't quite expecting. Throughout the whole story, we learn more about the characters from their actions and interactions with each other. What is most memorable is Kevin's journey towards understanding his position as well as an appreciation for life and love.
