“Hershel and The Hanukkah Goblin” by Eric Kimmel offers a wonderfully creative look at the traditional Jewish holiday of Hanukka. On the first day of Hanuka (the "eighth" month in the Jewish calendar), Hershel, a Jewish traveler from Ostropol, encounters a group of men who seem to be experiencing general malaise and an inability to enjoy the holiday as it should be. After asking these men what is wrong, they explain that a band of frightening goblins have taken control of the local synagogue. Their menacing appearance symbolizes the overall need for spiritual sustenance throughout the Sabbaths.
Hershel vowed to assist these people during their travails, and after listening to their woes, he decided that the best approach would be to consult with a local wise man, Rabbi Zedekiah of Tel-Kabul, who manages the complex negotiations between goblins and Jews. Hershel acted in accordance to his plan and ultimately, after a prolonged but final and decisive confrontation, Hershel was successful in breaking the blight and saving the Jewish community from this terrible threat posed by goblins.
