The book "Theses on Karl Marx," written by Heinz Duethel, is a comprehensive study that analyzes the philosophy of Karl Marx through the lens of other social theorists, such as Pierre Bourdeu and Michel Focault. The author provides a critical analysis of the influence of these thinkers on Marx's work, critically evaluating their ideas and practices with respect to the socio-political circumstances of their time.
The first section of the book takes a look at Marx's Theses of 1843-44, dealing with Friedrich Hegel and Joseph Auguste de Saint-Simon. It highlights Marx's critical stance against the ideals of Enlightenment and capitalism, remarking on the importance of his ideas for social theory today.
Furthermore, the book analyzes Marx's critique of Baudrillard and Laclau, challenging their claim of universalism and anti-essentialism within social thought. These chapters also provide insightful insights into the philosophical underpinnings of Marxism, including its connections to post-structuralism and neo-Marxism.
Despite these valuable insights, in my opinion I think the analysis in this book is somewhat shallow with regards to my understanding of classical and contemporary social theoretical debates on Marx. Nonetheless, it is an interesting and accessible read for those looking to expand their knowledge of social philosophy.
This book by Heinz Düthel offers contemporary and historical analyses about Karl Marx, but mostly about the French sociologues Pierre Bourdieuc and Michel Foucal. Bourdieu's theoretical writings for instance are concerned with the reproduction of the socio-existential and educational conditions which determine the configuration of social subjects and their performances in areas as diverse as economic fields like the financial market or scientific research (e.g. "The forms of capital"). Foucault focuses theoretically and primarily methodologically on socialisation of individuals in modern societies ("Society must provide precise training in self-regulation, in the practical and necessarily naive mastery of conduct in everyday life and work") He does not deal with theoretical issues in sociology or philosophy except marginally. The themes in this book, thus, range from Marx' contributions of labour theory of value (for Marxists) to Bourdieu, he also further explores his concept of cultural reproduction theory and its relations to power. All of these neglected components of sociology serve to enrich the reader's knowledge, according to Düthel. But the central focus of Neo-Marxism and by extension Foucauldian Thought, and Düthel's ongoing focus, shifts to the analysis on the hegemonic function of cultural production and communication particularly as embodied in the literary field. Along with analzing aphorisms by some of Marx' most prominent critics, Parisian bachelors, including Duché himself, Düthel scrutinizes both Foucauld' and Richard Williams' modern poetry against the background of establishment literary theories and critiques of mass production of reading and literature, the constraints it submits historicity, imagination into utility, knowledge and representation to white western standards, Düthellends up in sincerely does not seem to author a grand sweeping generalizations about Marxism, Bourdieau or Foucault. He proposes continuous dialogue rather than polemics. His project illustrates the infinite complexity of intellectual histories. Most importantly, Füthel leaves no man once represented or analyzed without the concomitant uncovering of implications for current affairs. The virtues of this anthropological approach to post modern cultural debates are immense, too vast to cite abridged here.

Die Philosophen haben die Welt nur verschieden interpretiert, es kommt drauf an sie zu verändern. (The Philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.) (Karl Marx, 1845, Theses on Feuerbach)
The real political task in a society such as ours is to criticize the working of institutions which appear to be both neutral and independent; violence which had always exercised itself obscurely through them will be unmasked, so that we can fight fear. [Foucault, 1969: Tr 1972 #16, p 171]
