Groundwater Geochemistry is a fundamental and innovative textbook that provides an interdisciplinary perspective on the biophysical environment through groundwater chemistry. In Water Chemistry for Environmental Engineers (ed H.H.Huber and D.E.Pashley), two volumes of which are published here, the authors describe the composition, physical properties, and environmental relevance of the phases and compounds that are found in air, water, soils, sediments, minerals, rocks, plants, animals, humans, plants and microorganisms—with special emphasis on their variation and links to human and geologic activity. The book is divided into three parts. The first part describes groundwater chemical constituents and their distributions. It covers elements and ions, inorganic and organic, natural and anthropogenic origins, extraction methods, various analyses, and typical hydrochemistry. Part 2 deals with non-conventional sources and transformations of groundwater and discusses recent developments in analytical methods and remote sensing. Part 3 discusses water resources’ interactions with the terrestrial environment and aspects of ecology, including human impact and risk assessment as well as the micro-environment response and its implications for site characterization, geoengineering, and water treatment.
The book covers most of the important parameters and processes related to geochemistry of recharge, transport, and removal of groundwater. It includes data and information on major ion chemistry, redox equilibrium, trace metal concentrations, isotope hydrology, hydrogeochemistry, geochemistry of natural groundwater discharges and analytical methods used in groundwater geochemical studies. The contents of the book derive from original research conducted by the authors and present a comprehensive review on groundwater chemistry.
