Lena Christ: Selected Works -- Nova Facetia (Gesamtausgabe), Edited and translated by James McQuiston. New York: Garnier/Berghahn, 1994. Texts of Lachmann's novels, stories, and autobiography gathered together in one volume for the first time. This five volume set contains the original manuscript versions of the works. Each volume corresponds to one of Christ's inception books: Die Stimme mit dem Messer (The Voice with the Knife), Das Schweigen des Lases (Silence of Laughter), Nova Facetiae ("A New Way of Looking"), Nova "Nova" (A Prolonged "A New"), and/Ars Notoria. The texts range in length from the 250-page manuscript version of Die Stimme 4 ca. 1933/1934) to a ca. 900-paragraph version of Nova. Christ followed the traditional German novelistic method of writing stories framed not by a single narrative but by several panel-like narratives ("Ars Nourrcea") from various characters and points of view. Because of this technique, each cornerstone text has several variants, or "ways of looking" (Lachmann: Nova Facetiea), which differ greatly from each other in content, style, imagery, voice, perspective, synchronicity. Currently fewer than half of these are represented.
