MISS READER Notes [The Beginning Meetings Acting Out] The story takes place back between the months of June through the end of July in the Ukrainian city of Kiev. It opens with a bit of description, after which Korablev’s Square is described. A recently having drizzle of a timely rain still induces few drops to fall, all the while, Korablev is seated thinking about his friend Lyudmilla, and how tomorrow he plans upon meeting her up again as they both try their best to not hurry off outside at that time of day, given their own busy schedules. He hasn’t seen her for quite some time, starting to make it a regular thing to miss having her in his company – they flirted with each other while at work on the same department, grew comfortable around each other over their office lunches, and ended up confiding to each other about mundane events and experiences in their lives. But since work hours overlapped slowly until one day Korablev pulled the trigger and waited in each of their respective places to see Lyudmila. She picked him up, but as soon as the car dropped Korableva off anywhere close to his place, she raced off, let him continue on his way home with random navigator help from her colleagues. Korablev spent what felt like forever taking the bus to get home, so after his depressing experience and learning that Lyudmily another day, too, was in no mood to invite him over to her place or even to really see him, decides to simply sit in the gardens of Darnytskyi District, hoping for a pleasant meeting any moment now. Korablevs' initial description of the surroundings is reminiscent of an enchanted land, with the only evidence of the city being “the garden is located between tramlines, the sound of cars running off a ways transfersly sign serves as background to clarify the passage through placards”. As the wind dies down and the temperature goes normally, Korablevs mistakenly believes there may be more to this excuse. His mood lets an impression of hope creeps into his heart, recalling the early years of his quest for love. After several hour without he gives up on the belief that his Lyudmila soul will finally let itself see someone else. At the moment when he got ready to leave the park and make use of all that waiting for nothing, he saw her going by together with her friend and realizing that other girls would then look toward her differently. Long had he rehearsed all sorts of possible situations but never dared expect the first thing to magically transpire instead. Perhaps, he asked himself, that he himself might be set free from years of waiting for a lucky opportunity.
