Lenore Skenazi argues the need for a new approach to parenting in her book, Free-Range Kids: How to Raise Mentally Healthy, Self Reliant Children Without Going Nuts With Worry. She shares her own story of encouraging her son and daughter from an early age and sharing many family activities with them. Skenazy encourages parents to steer clear of over protective parenting; she explains that kids need healthy boundaries, but will rarely (if ever) meet any real harm, with protection. Instead, parents should encourage their children, while ruling out negativity and ridicule. Skenzay develops her argument in phases, presenting examples - both positive and negative (ie a fatal accident involving a neighbor not following safety measures). Skenazy's conclusion focuses on the reality that denying your child choice and opportunity to express themselves may stifle them and cause them to believe their world is lacking in possibility. This book is an easy read, with not too much jargon to complicate reading for the average parent. Some surface level information on various health ailments and population rates (to encourage every parent to get their vaccines!) would help this book stand apart from other forays into parenting books. Skanazy's advice on mental health and teaching appropriate boundaries could prove invaluable in any parenting situation, offended or happy circumstance.

Lenore Skenazy
FREE RANGE KIDS has become a national movement, sparked by the incredible response to Lenore Skenazy?s piece about allowing her 9-year-old ride the subway alone in NYC. Parent groups argued about it, bloggers, blogged, spouses became uncivil with each other, and the media jumped all over it. A lot of parents today, Skenazy says, see no difference between letting their kids walk to school and letting them walk through a firing range. Any risk is seen as too much risk. But if you try to prevent every possible danger or difficult in your child?s everyday life, that child never gets a chance to grow up. We parents have to realize that the greatest risk of all just might be trying to raise a child who never encounters choice or independence.
