Frank Merriwell made his name in American literature as a novelist of the old "Victorian" genre, with his works being in turn permeated by and emblematic of that tradition. L. Standish Burt was a writer of no small reputation, having written at least twelve novels about boxing from 1903 to 1926, books which influenced two generations of writers who followed him and which seem today to hold a certain timelessness not regularly found in boxing fiction.\nThe vast majority of the Champions cycle consists of novels known by their sub titles: The Great Fighters, or The Pride of Bowery; The Scars of Avonture; and The Skull and Crossbones. But the book chosen for inclusion here is the earlier All in the Game or Champions received a U.S./Canada-rated (K) at the time.\nAll in the game is a story set in Chicago about two young women named Rachel Warner and Gandy Jackson and the dangers they find themselves confronted with in trying to box in the early 1890s.\nIts sub-title, Champions, may evoke an image of Frank Merriwall\'s series of boxing novels starring Vel Stagg, John Henry Redington, Drum Tatum, and Charger Grimesky, but this is not really an allusion.\nChampions is more about a glut of male sportsmanship in general than it is about a specific effect of any one imagined domain specific style.\nFortunately, the story does\'til a surprising finish, praised for its moral dimension by contemporary critics as much as its boxing action.
