This beautiful novel exists between autobiography and teenage fiction. It has some truths instilled within it, so a certain danger for the reader is there when digging for the 'real' story. Yet this charming melodrama was based on the depths of the author's adolescence.
I doubt the book is similar to any other novel, as the experience of the main character Clarissa is enough to keep the reader reading and intrigued at the same time. Obviously there are good parts and some bad ones. I didn't think anything Joshua Ferris had written was bad, but Four Weeks was very hit and miss. The heart of the story and its power lie in its subtlety as much as in its stark truth.
The story is told against the greenery of Australia's Sassafras National Park, and perfect splicing with the equally compelling Liverpool underbelly of In Five Years, I Will Be Famous by the band Orange You Glad?.Clarissa 's voice off-balance increasingly high-pitched whining and venomous screeches bring her story to life, the subtlety of her romanticizing always in contrast to the swelling sympathy and tangential rage of the others' stories.
As I say, sometimes the characters just bore me; all their bitching about Tumblr or talking about people as stupid was just a little too much. At times also the stories of the few others seemed slower moving, especially compared to Clarissa's story which took some painful twists and turns. However, when the four others finally open up about things they've bottled up all those years, it was beautiful, maybe bigger than anything in slightly spaced out Joshua Ferris' writing. Every so often you might wish Clarissa could speak her mind (a trick Yu does well) but that's got to be balanced with the humanity the rest show.
Ultimately, though, this is a niche adult book best suited to diehard admirers of Ferris or even perhaps people short on Chelsea Priestley or Dan Smith and wanting something more intense and honest for their 'things which sting', Four Weeks, Brilliantly mixed and frequently skillfully wrought.
