Angela McRobbie examines the contradictory relationship between feminism and women's lives. She focuses on the strains that feminism has underpinned by discussing the uneven social opportunities offered to women and young women. While the movement has emancipated many women, McRobbie maintains that it has also resulted in an unequal distribution of social burdens, thus stripping women of their 'private sphere', in which much of the mitigating emotional labour required for households and children is exercised. She examines how young women face heightened expectations of familial commitments, particularly regarding child care, as part of their gendered socialisation and how this can undermine their ability to develop their intellectual capacities. McRobbie brings a critical approach to demography and population policy, arguing that policies such as one-child families are blatant examples of state appropriation of women's reproductive labour without equal social recognition or acknowledgement and that the state actually reproduces bourgeois structures of gender inequality.
