A compilation of new data and revised information that will also serve as a reference for the study of the origin of life and evolution. The book describes the use of endospores from bacteria as model organisms for studying extreme environments and the interplanetary transmission of life. Other bacteria, archaea, mosses, fungi, yeasts, and even tiny animals like tardigrades or "water bears" are all being researched for their tolerance for extreme conditions, both on simulated and real spacecraft. Experimental data gathered under conditions aboard the International Space station and on space probes lasting up to 18 months are included. Proposals for extraterrestrial energy supplies are also mentioned.
The book contains new and updated information and it is intended for use both in origination of life studies and evolution research. The book examines the use of endospore bacteria as model systems to study survivability in extreme environmental conditions and the interplanetary dispersal of life and contains natural experimental studies that have taken place on the ISS and spacecraft that the duration of these studies span up to 2 years in duration. Several forms of bacteria and archaea including lichens and various fungi and algae have also been examined concerning their resilience to challenging conditions both in simulations and in the environment of outer space. Experimental data obtained as a result of these studies on the IS and space probes are discussed and evaluated and potential extraterrestrial power sources are proposed.

Описание книги от Группа авторов
The data in this book are new or updated, and will serve also as Origin of Life and evolutionary studies. Endospores of bacteria have a long history of use as model organisms in astrobiology, including survival in extreme environments and interplanetary transfer of life. Numerous other bacteria as well as archaea, lichens, fungi, algae and tiny animals (tardigrades, or water bears) are now being investigated for their tolerance to extreme conditions in simulated or real space environments. Experimental results from exposure studies on the International Space Station and space probes for up to 1.5 years are presented and discussed. Suggestions for extaterrestrial energy sources are also indicated.
