Colin McIver with novel `Extreme Measures` wants to go away to clear his mind and so on. When his mum tells him that his daughter Catherine / Carly will be examined for learning difficulties if he goes, he changes his mind.
Colin is fearsome and autocratic. He is seeking solitude, but cannot have it without finding out how "the little OXO rabbit" lived. Christine Halsey discovered that Colin had been raping and murdering young women - but there is no proof of this in his isolated country home.
His solicitor tells him that, even without proof, a court will allow a stay so that they can investigate and not charge him. He knows about Colin's family, in particular his estranged wife, Nikki, but decides to defend Colin despite knowing he is guilty.
With McIvers vicar and caretaker unaware of what Colin has done, he returns home to find Colin already there. Colin comes up with an elaborate plan to get the leverage he needs to regain control of his wife and daughter without taking anyone else's life.
