This book reflects the events of Mark Twain’s life - friendship, love, devotion, nostalgia, personal victories and defeats, dreams and actual worries. This is an autobiographical novel based on the personal experience of Mark Twain. The novel reflects his experiences and his characteristics: he is honest, practical, capable of taking a punch and always finding a way out. However, he is also prone to lies, plots, betrayal, unrequited love, martyrdom, conscience guilt, and attacks against others. A heart of this charismatic person was strongly wounded by cruelty, ingratitude, envy, treason. He is a man with varied talents: artist, performer, politician, orator, traveler.
The plot of the novel consists of three parts. In the first part, the main character becomes known as The Binder. He spends six years on an Indiana town where his father is the minister. But already at the beginning of his activities, he makes a name for himself as a brilliant speaker. Here, the young man meets a beautiful women - Sarah Good, whose son Frederick, after John’s influence, moves to Kingston City. Even later, when Mark returns to their old town and is invited to the celebration of Sarah Goodman, he encounters his ex-love Mary Jarvis and his former friend William Crown Prince, with whom he goes not long ago against many. Although Mark is tempted to take all this back, it soon turns out that the whole Jacobson family is opposed to him. Through a series of circumstances, Mark finds work at "Ladies General and Reform Club", and subsequently becomes one of the most famous society figures in the small city.
In the second part, after reading a column in the New York Tribune, he decides to go to America to work as an editor and publisher. After some time his family returns to see the man they had grown to respect. After Mark becomes governor of New Orleans, there is a scandal with Miss Amelia Dill, which quickly changes his views and ultimately results in his resignation. From America Mark goes to Europe, where during a stay in Paris he falls in love with Russian noblewoman Elena Zosiminskaya.
